Do I have the Holy Spirit of God?

How can we know if we have the Holy Spirit of God within us?

Do we believe that Jesus is the Son of God? If we answered yes, than we have the Spirit of God within us. (1 John 4:15) "Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God." (Matthew 16:16-17) "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven." (1 Corinthians 12:3) "Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost."

God our Father gives His Holy Spirit to all who confess and believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Lord God. Jesus is the only way to eternal life. (Acts 4:12) "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

The Holy Spirit of God is given to all individuals within the church to profit the whole body of the church of God. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11) "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

We have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit and are to follow, or walk, as Jesus did on this earth more than 2000 years ago. (John 15:16) "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you." Jesus said, those whom he calls his brothers, are those that hear the word of God and DO IT. (Luke 8:21) "And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it."

The Holy Spirit of God will not force us to DO His will. That is a decision we make every day in our walk with Jesus. Jesus willingly followed every commandment of God with perfection because He loved His Father with all His heart, and with all His soul, and with all His mind, and with all His strength and He loved His neighbor as Himself. (John 15:10) "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love."

Our walk is a lifetime journey which is only accomplished by the grace of God through His Holy Spirit. After receiving the Holy Spirit we are but babes in Christ because we do not know the word of God. (1 Peter 2:2) "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:" Once we start learning and OBEYING the Holy Scriptures we start to grow, as a living tree. (John 15:2) "Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit."

When we follow Jesus, God the Father purges or prunes the branches that bear fruit, so that it (we), will bear more fruit. God removes unfruitful, sinful, characteristics from us, by showing us what sin is, then we will produce more fruit, which are the attributes of God, to love one another. (Galatians 5:14) "For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."

(1 John 2:1-6) "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked."

Please take heed to Jesus warning, to those who are babes in Christ, in His parable of the sower and the seed.

  • The seed (word of God) that fell on the wayside - (Mark 4:15) "And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts."

  • The seed (word of God) that fell on stony ground - (Mark 4:16-17) "And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended."

  • The seed (word of God) that fell among thorns - (Mark 4:18-19) "And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful."

  • The seed (word of God) that fell on the good ground - (Mark 4:20) "And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred."

Following Jesus is a lifetime, total commitment which we need to take, one day at a time, with much prayer. Don't be discouraged because we're not alone. (John 14:23) "Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." (Romans 8:31) "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?"
