The Sign of the Rainbow

What is the purpose of a rainbow? All of Gods' creation has some important purpose for mankind. Plant-life makes oxygen for us. The sun heats the earth and gives us light. All life needs water to exist. The earth gives us food. God has given us animals to help us with farming, transportation and also food and clothing. Even the stars and the moon are used by mankind for navigational purposes.

These are but a few of the vast array of gifts our Almighty God has given us, but what is the purpose of the rainbow? The rainbow represents a promise from God and is a sign of the covenant that God would never again flood the earth with water because of the wickedness of mankind and it is also a symbol of Jesus the Savior.

(Genesis 9:13-17) "I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth."

A token means a sign and a covenant is a agreement. The rainbow is the visual contract between God and every living creature upon the earth. It is placed in the cloud for our eyes to see, to know that our God is a loving God, that forgives our sins. From the days of Noah, humanity has continued in it's sinful ways, and we all deserve the penalty of death. But our God is merciful, (Hebrews 8:12) "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more." The rainbow is a symbol of the promise of our Lord Jesus, and His sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.

God Almighty has also given us a visual contract of our own, that we may show Him that we are his children. It is a sign of faith, that we show to God, every time we honor the sabbath day. We honor that day because He commands us. (Exodus 20:8-10) "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:" Did you notice the last part of that verse: nor the stranger that is within thy gates? This applies to everyone, both Jew and Gentile. (Romans 10:12) "For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him."

The sabbath is a sign and agreement between us and God. If we honor and keep the seventh day holy, our Lord promises to set us apart, as His children, so that we may know him personally, as our only God and Father.

(Ezekiel 20:12) "Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them."

  • (Ezekiel 20:20) "And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God."
  • (Exodus 31:13) "Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you."
  • (Exodus 31:16) "Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant."

Many people, even some whom call themselves christians, do not acknowledge God as the creator of all creation as accounted in the Holy Scriptures. Why? Because they do not honor the day created in honor of the creation. (Exodus 20:11) "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."

Our Lord Jesus created that special day of the week just for us. (Matthew 12:8) "For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day." (Mark 2:27) "And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:" On the sabbath day we are to direct all our thoughts only onto Him, so that we may know the Lord our God. (Isaiah 58:13-14) "If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honorable; and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it."

Jesus and the early church honored the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week. The numbers of the days of the week have never changed since the beginning of creation, and our Lord Jesus is the same today as yesterday. (Hebrews 13:8) "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever." Don't allow the power of satan to deceive you, for you have a greater power, of the Holy Spirit of God, within you. (1 John 4:4) "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."

And Jesus said, (John 17:3) "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."
